Leagues that Lead
Last month, we discussed the prospect of pickleball becoming an Olympic Sport. There’s a lot more that needs to be done to grow the sport to get it to that level––and recreational leagues are the best way to truly move pickleball forward.
Pickleball leagues are crucial to pickleball development. Over the last few years, we’ve seen pickleball growth initiatives that funnel money and resources into the sport at a professional level. With increased funding and the growth of major professional organizations like MLP and PPA, strides have been made to legitimize the sport and bring public attention to pickleball. But the reality is that most of us aren’t professional pickleball players, and the emphasis on professional pickleball, although critical, can only take pickleball so far.
At this stage, because we still have a long way to go before pickleball joins the ranks of core US sports, the benefits of professional pickleball funding and development can be exclusive. Major pickleball investors like LeBron James and Tom Brady do bring a lot of attention to pickleball and contribute to growth and overall success, but professional pickleball development alone is not enough to maintain pickleball popularity. Getting people invested in the sport on a personal level is necessary for pickleball longevity, which is achieved through community play in leagues.
Recreational leagues foster pickleball growth from the ground up. They foster a genuine joy for the sport amongst players, provide opportunities for competition, encourage personal connection within the sport, bring communities together, and encourage new players to get involved in a way that professional pickleball can’t do just yet. Local leagues have a place for every pickleball player, regardless of skill level and background. They foster pickleball communities that are focused on fun, which is really what will get more involved in the sport.
Leagues are the foundation of pickleball, and a strong foundation is the real power behind the pickleball boom. Strength in numbers has been the driving force of pickleball growth over the last five years. As important as growing professional pickleball is, at TrackitHub, we know that at its core, pickleball is for everyone, not just professional athletes or tournament players. That means we must create accessible opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to get involved. We can’t build pickleball from the top down. Leagues are the grassroots method to target pickleball growth in younger generations worldwide. We must build pickleball from the bottom up to increase public investment in the sport. We’re proud that our Premier Pickleball League is working to do just that.
